Filters, along with the desire to share positivity have led to a world where much that looks successful is just an illusion. Thankfully, you have the choice to be authentic even in a world full of illusion. Here are some tips to help you stay true to your authentic self.
Most people only share the good things in their lives. They feel if they share the less desirable things, people might be turned off or not like them. But the truth is, when you yourself to be who you are with all your imperfections, you can build stronger connections with those who can relate.
Know Your Values and Morals
Being clear about your values and morals allows you to be yourself without doubts. If you are not yet sure who you are, which is fine, take time to explore what you want to stand for in this world. Seek to define your values and morals. Create a personal mission statement to help guide you.
There is a vast difference in being nice and being kind. Nice is being polite. Kindness is caring and showing you care, even when the message is less than desirable.
Listen More Than You Speak
Another way to be more authentic is to be quiet. When you listen, rather than talk, something incredible happens. Suddenly you start to understand people and can see the best way to respond to them. This in turn, creates a better, more authentic connection.
If you want to be viewed as being authentic, it is imperative you are open-minded and accepting of others. This includes knowing when to mind your own business as well as being open to many ideas, even if you do not agree, will draw people to you.
When you make choices, it is good to know the reason behind the decision. Sometimes the reason is simple, you like the color and style of that new jacket. However, at times, there are deeper reasons for the things you do. Knowing them allows you to show your passion and energy for the choices you make and the things you do.
Relationships of all kinds are built on trust. Following through with what you say is an important part of being authentic. If you make a promise, keep it. If you absolutely cannot keep it, be honest as to why. When you are trustworthy, honest and transparent, people will view you as being authentic.
Take some time to think about various scenarios that may crop up in your life. Consider the conversation and how you can best respond. Ensure your response fits your values, lives up to your promises, and is the truth. At the same time, don't say one thing and do something else. Practice what you preach.
Being authentic is not always easy but the more you can do it, the better you will be able to relate to others. You'll build stronger relationships in all aspects of your life.
Remember, being authentic is not about never using filters. It is about when you do use that filter, you are honest about it.
